WHAT IS YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH
FIRST AID TRAINING?

Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognized skills-based training that teaches participants how to notice and support an individual who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge or crisis.

The sooner we can help a youth in distress the better the outcomes will be.
Bring this training to your community and workplace.

Will experience a mental health challenge at some point during their life

WHY SHOULD YOU BRING THIS CLASS TO YOUR COMMUNITY?

  • Talking about mental health reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide and allows the adult who take the class to step forward and help the teen who struggle

  • The sooner you help someone who experience mental health challenges, the better the outcomes will be - emotionally, socially and academically

  • In some situations, mental health challenge can turn to a crisis - by helping someone who experience mental health challenges, you prevent it from escalating to a crisis

WHAT SKILLS WOULD YOU LEARN?

  • A deeper understanding of teen development

  • Practical skills to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges among youth

  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a youth in distress

  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as listening non-judgmentally and communication skills

  • Understanding of how culture plays a role in recognizing mental health challenges and encouraging the youth and their caregivers to reach out for help

  • Mastering how to use ALGEE, the 5-step action plan in crisis and non-crisis situations and where to turn for help – professional and self help resources

What Participants Say

I feel more empowered to be able to recognize and support someone in need of help. It was a great class and should be mandatory.
Danit Erlich made me feel safe and welcome. The level of empathy and reassurance she showed throughout the class was perfect for this subject matter.

Testimonial video of two participants from Lake Washington School District:

Why should you take the class with me?

During the training, I highlight the importance of culture awareness, culture humility and encourage participants to share about their culture.

I talk about the importance of self care and encourage participants to share what they like to do for self care.

Participants feel comfortable sharing and asking questions and feel the training added more tools to their toolbox.
